Virginia Festival of the Book welcomes tens of thousands of writers, publishers, book lovers, and book buyers to Charlottesville VA each March. The 2016 Festival is from March 16 to March 20 with venues around the city book stores and other businesses, in city and county public schools, in auditoriums and galleries and other venues of the University of Virginia, and other settings.

For more than ten years community LGBTQ leaders have recommended writers, panelists, and other presentations to the Festival and collaborated with the Festival to host and moderate panels, readings, and other events. Our collaborations have attracted large and engaged audiences to hear and meet LGBTQ writers and to discuss topics of LGBTQ concerns in writing and print and digital publication.

Writers and publishers are invited to submit their proposals directly to the Festival here.

Submission rules include:

  • Deadline: October 1
  • Online Applications: Only online applications are accepted.
  • Agents and Representatives: Agents and author representatives are encouraged to submit if they have the authors’ consent. Please let the authors know that their names have been submitted for consideration.
  • Publishing Date Priorities: Preference is given to books released either in hardback or paperback in 2015 and up to March 14, 2016. Books must be available by March 14 to be considered for the 2016 Festival; authors with later publication dates may consider applying for 2017.
  • Book or ARC submissions: An application is not complete until we have received two copies of the book or advanced reader’s copy [ARC]. …

It has often been helpful to send an alert regarding your interest to community collaborators who have usually been invited to provide comments and recommendations regarding submissions to the Festival. A contact for that is Edward Strickler, at the University of Virginia, at els2e@virginia.edu (that’s me! the Festival Staff have requested that I send them some early comments and recommendations by September 1 to allow time time to ensure online submissions are made by October 1).
