About LGBTQ Writers in Schools

Since 2015, Lambda Literary and the NYC Department of Education have worked together to bring award-winning LGBTQ writers into schools to discuss their books and lives. Every participating student receives a free copy of the book discussed. Full list of current authors and titles here.

Program Goals

  • Bring literature to life by connecting students with working LGBTQ authors.
  • Create a safer space for all students by building empathy for LGBTQ experience.
  • Draw connections between LGBTQ writing and concerns in students’ lives.

What Teachers Are Saying

“LGBTQ characters in young adult fiction saves lives—not only giving those in the community a sense of belonging, but also teaching those who are not LGBTQ how to support those who are. This program has truly helped to change the whole culture of our school into one that is more inclusive and accepting. I want to continue this work every year.”

—Shelly Cunningham, M.S. 51 William Alexander, Teacher/GSA Advisor
