The Lambda Lit Book Club, the queerest book club in LA, has a new facilitator. Steven Reigns, West Hollywood’s first City Poet and author of Inheritance and 3-Pack Jack, will take Lambda’s Executive Director, Tony Valenzuela’s position of leading discussions of an eclectic mix of LGBTQ literature including classics, unheralded gems, and buzz-worthy new releases.

Steven Reigns has taught writing workshops around the country to LGBTQ youth and people living with HIV. For the past 10 years, he has lead the “My Life is Poetry” workshop, an autobiographical poetry workshop for LGBT seniors and edited an anthology of their work by the same name. In addition to being a poet, Reigns is a  therapist specializing in group therapy and leads workshops previously praised by A&U Magazine.

Tony Valenzuela is changing his role in the book club due to the demands of the growing Lambda Literary organization. He said, “For three years I’ve had the privilege of leading dynamic conversations about some of our community’s greatest books with a smart and generous core group of attendees. I’ll miss it but am thrilled to have Steven Reigns, whom I’ve long admired, take over and bring a new energy to the club.” Reigns welcomes the new position stating, “I’ve spent so much of my career as a poet connecting people with the pleasure of writing. I’m excited to spend time discussing the gratification of reading good writing.”

The book, chosen by Reigns, to start off the new year of the Lambda Lit Book Club is Justin Torres’ We The Animals. Reigns said, “In such a slim volume Torres conveys so much complexity about difference and differentiating. It’s a beautifully crafted, layered book and perfect for discussion in a book club.” Torres’ dazzling debut novel was workshopped when he was part of Lambda’s Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices. The book has been translated into fifteen languages and is currently being adapted into a feature film.

The Lambda Lit Book Club, co sponsored by the West Hollywood Public Library, has been in existence since 2012 and has generated a strong response from participants interested in the thoughtful discussion of LGBTQ literature. Everyone is invited to attend and encouraged to share their thoughts about the content of work.

The Lambda Book Club has had its final meeting for 2015 but will begin again January 26, 2016. Discussion starts promptly at 7 pm in the Community room of the West Hollywood Library. Book club selections are available to check out at the West Hollywood Public Library.
