- OUR SUPPORTERS
Your ongoing support of Lambda Literary is precisely why this organization continues to make strides to advance LGBTQ literature and support our community’s passionate readers, talented writers, and innovative publishers.
We’ve had so much exciting news to share this year: Lambda was honored by the National Book Foundation as one of four finalists of the “Innovations in Reading” prize. We were selected by Bloomberg Philanthropies to participate in their prestigious “Arts Innovation and Management Program” to help us continue to learn the best practices of world-class arts organizations. We were thrilled to announce Chuck Forester’s $1 million planned gift to go towards Lambda’s future endowment and with it the launch of the Lambda Literary Legacy Circle, our new planned giving program.
These are all important affirmations of Lambda Literary’s success, but we can’t do it without you.
Today, we need your support to help us sustain our one-of-a-kind programs. Our mission to honor excellence, promote visibility, build community, and encourage the development of emerging writers requires more resources than ever.
To that end, six extraordinary donors – Steven Coulter, David Ebershoff, John Faubion, Catherine Ryan Hyde, Noelle Leca, and Kay Percy – have taken up the call to support Lambda by pledging a total of $20,000 and asking you to match their donations toward our fall fundraising goal of $40,000.
Here’s why Lambda Literary needs your support more than ever:
Lambda’s Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices has grown from thirty-six students in three faculty-led workshops (fiction, nonfiction, poetry) when it was founded in 2007, to sixty students in five faculty-led workshops today. Applications to the Retreat have more than tripled and nearly all our students require scholarship support to attend.
The Lambda Literary Review online magazine publishes more LGBTQ book reviews and in-depth author interviews than any other publication in the world, this year featuring exciting literary voices such as Jonathan Galassi, Maggie Nelson, Roz Kaveney, Brad Gooch, and John Keene.
LGBTQ Writers in Schools brings authors into classrooms to discuss queer literature with young people. Last month the San Diego Unified Schools District renewed a partnership with Lambda for the next three years to offer the program as a part of their high school curriculum! We are also making inroads with New York City Schools, the largest district in the country, to launch the program there.
New Lambda Literary publishing projects, including The Telander Chapbook Award for Emerging Trans Poets will support trans poets in the early stages of their careers and encourages their growth as writers. Lambda is partnering with YESYES books to publish the first winner of the chapbook contest.
The Lambda Literary Awards, our marquee event, is the most important LGBTQ literary prize in the world. This year’s ceremony had a record attendance of 575 and featured John Waters, Rita Mae Brown, Gloria Steinem, Liz Smith, and Lammy winners in twenty-four different genres. Book submissions for award consideration have doubled in five years (from 425 to nearly 900 now).
Your tax-deductible donation to the fall Challenge Grant campaign will allow Lambda Literary to review more LGBTQ titles, offer more scholarship support to our community’s emerging writers, introduce more high school students to queer books, publish a growing number of exciting new voices, and continue to raise the profile of the Lammys gala, which is covered by a growing list of major international media.
If you are not a current supporter of Lambda Literary, please consider becoming a member and see your tax-deductible gift doubled.
If you are already a member, please use this opportunity to increase your 2015 contribution and see your donation matched.
Like most nonprofit organizations, Lambda Literary counts on your support to sustain our programs, which put the literature of our community – the stories of our lives – front and center. Whether you can afford $50, $250 or $1,000, you will see your contribution doubled through November.
We are grateful to our 2015 Challenge Grant donors for their generosity. Please help us turn their $20,000 challenge into $40,000 for Lambda Literary’s programs by making a tax-deductible donation today.
We thank you for your support!
