We love LGBTQ literature, and we also love movies…especially LGBTQ literary movies!

Here are five we’re looking forward to this summer, to stream or see at the theater:

 

1. Wild Nights with Emily

Wild Nights with Emily poster

This critically acclaimed dramatization of the poet Emily Dickinson’s life centers on her much-discussed lesbian relationships.

 

2. Rafiki

Rafiki poster

Inspired by Ugandan Monica Arac de Nyeko’s 2007 Caine Prize-winning short story “Jambula Tree,” this adaptation follows two Kenyan girls in love who must choose between their happiness and safety.

 

3. Tell it to the Bees

Tell it to the Bees poster

Based on Fiona Shaw’s 2009 novel of the same name, Tell it to the Bees follows the relationship between two women in 1950s rural Scotland.

 

4. Pasolini

This film chronicles the last days of the notorious Italian film director and author Pier Paolo Pasolini.

 

5. Vita and Virginia

Vita & Virginia poster

Adapted from Eileen Atkins’s 1992 play, Vita and Virginia portrays the affair between Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West in the 1920s that served as the inspiration for Woolf’s novel Orlando.
