& Books Not Found Anywhere Else

Compiling this list every month is bar none my most challenging duty. Gathering a list of LGBT books published every month isn’t as easy as it seems. Pub dates change. Genres evolve. Authors come out.

However, this is perhaps one of the most important jobs I get to do. Once a month I call attention to books that you can’t find on mainstream book sites.

Consider Dawn Mueller’s abstinence memoir, A Single Year (CreateSpace) — which technically came out in Jan — or Carla Harryman and Lyn Hejinian’s novel, The Wide Road (Belladonna) which took 10 years to write. More and more it’s “the little guys” — the micro publishers and indies that are making the biggest creative impact.

But by no means have major publishers abandoned LGBT titles — especially when it comes to Young Adult books. This month Penguin publishes Dan Savage’s It Gets Better. Harper, Scholastic and Little, Brown all have LGBT books out including Patrick Ryan’s Gemini Bites and Cris Beam’s I Am J.

So in addition to cruising the big names here (Gore Vidal anyone?), check out some of the lesser-known players listed. You may find the “perfect book” in an unexpected place.
