Dragon Moon Press is pleased to announce our December, 2011 open submissions period. We would like to thank you for your interest in submitting your manuscript to us for consideration. Please read our guidelines carefully.

Submissions are open December 1, 2011 – December 31, 2011.

What we’re looking for: Completed novel-length fantasy or urban fantasy manuscripts targeted to the adult market or the upper border of YA. No middle grade or children’s literature, please. Manuscripts may be “Young Adult friendly” but keep in mind that we do not market our books to the YA reader.

In this submissions period, we are ONLY seeking fantasy (traditional/epic fantasy and sword-and-sorcery) and contemporary urban fantasy, to round out our 2012 list. We are looking for strong, character-driven stories that are fresh, new, polished and edited, and have distinctive voice. Please keep our genre preference in mind before you submit.

Length: 90,000-110,000 words.

Format: We accept electronic submissions only. Please send a query letter as the body of your email, followed by the first 15 pages of the manuscript (omitting frontmatter such as acknowledgments or dedications please), also in the body of the message. Do not use fancy fonts, formatting, or text colors. Do not include graphics. Please separate sections with a single character such as # or * on a new line.

Readability is our priority; we will be appreciative if it is yours, too. Bells and whistles (or in this case, fancy formatting and sparkle) will not impress us. Let your story impress us on its own merit.

DO NOT send attachments and do not direct us to go look at your manuscript on your website.

Query letter: Your query MUST include your name and email address in the body of your email, along with title, genre and word count, a brief (one or two sentences) interesting synopsis of your story (your “elevator pitch”) and any relevant credits you may have.

Please allow 4-6 months for a response.

What we’re NOT looking for: This year’s NaNoWriMo project. Children’s/middle grade. Anthologies, short story collections, novellas, reprints. Or (it bears repeating) this year’s NaNoWriMo project.

We still love science fiction, but we are not seeking science fiction in this particular submissions period. We’re just looking for a couple great manuscripts to round out an already-great list.

We will not reconsider manuscripts that we have previously decided were not for us. (So if you’ve gotten a rejection letter from us on a manuscript in the past, please do not query that manuscript again. We’ll remember. We have long memories, and also we have spreadsheets.)

We will not consider more than one manuscript per author, so please only send us your strongest work which will best fit our guidelines. If we wish to see more from you, we will ask you.

Long synopses will not be read. Please do not send a lengthy biography, artwork or other image files, testimonials from friends, family or teachers, or a marketing plan. Please do not tell us who you would cast in the movie version. Really. We need to see that you’re focused on making a strong book, first.

Email to: DMPSubmissions  @  gmail . com

Subject line: ”DEC2011 SUBMISSION:” followed by your book title. Obviously, do not use this subject line after December 31. It will signal to us that you haven’t paid sufficient attention to these guidelines.

If we request a full manuscript: A requested full manuscript is the only submission that should be an email attachment. Please send the full manuscript in Microsoft Word .doc (not .docx) format. It should be double spaced between lines, with one space after a period. We prefer italics to underlines, minimal formatting (no single character ellipses or spaces between periods in ellipses, no creative ink colors or header styles, and no fancy characters as section breaks), in Times New Roman. The title page should include the title, your name and contact information (including your email address), and an estimated word count. Please include your name, title and page number in a single line on the header on each page. (Name / Title / #)

From all of us at Dragon Moon Press, thank you for your support, and best wishes – we really do hope you find the perfect home for your story.
