First came Assaracus, named after the lesser-known brother of Ganymede. In its two-year existence, the gay poetry journal edited by Bryan Borland, publisher of Sibling Rivalry Press, has been praised by the community of writers and readers it has brought together and the journal itself was named by Library Journal as a best new magazine. Each issue of Assaracus features a small number of poets and a portfolio of their work. With its eighth issue forthcoming in October, Assaracus has provided gay poets with a consistent, trusted platform for visibility.
Now, with editor Raymond Luczak at the helm, Sibling Rivalry Press announces Jonathan, a brand-new journal in both print and eBook formats featuring fiction by queer male writers. Named after the lesser-known close friend (and speculated lover) of King David in the Old Testament, Jonathan will feature ten works of fiction by gay writers in each issue.
Call for Submissions: We are interested in original and unpublished short fiction of up to 3,000 words. We welcome excerpts from novels in progress, but the pieces must be completely stand-alone. A batch of short-short stories would be great, too.
Just because we are featuring work by gay, bisexual, and transgender male writers doesn’t mean that we are interested in reading about ONLY the queer male experience. In fact, contributors don’t have to write about the queer experience at all, but must identify as a gay, bisexual, or transgender man. We want Jonathan to be a safe place should you want to share a queer perspective in your fiction. We believe that your experiences will help contribute to the richness of your work. Surprise us! All subject matters are welcome. However, for fiction with erotic content, we do ask that the focus be on the story, not the sex.
Submit your work to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
We accept electronic submissions (Word .doc or .rtf files) ONLY. On the final page of your manuscript, please include a short bio.
The deadline for submissions is September 15, 2012. The publication date for our first issue is December 6, 2012.
Each writer will receive a copy of the issue in which their work appears.
Call for Submissions: Cover Art. We welcome links from visual artists to their online portfolios wishing to have their work considered for Jonathan‘s future covers. We’re always on the lookout for something new and memorable. Artists whose work is chosen will receive a complimentary copy of the issue and worldwide promotion/visibility.
Links to online portfolios should be emailed to: email@example.com
