Support the Lambda Literary Foundation Today with a Year-End Tax-Deductible Donation by December 31!

As the end of the year approaches here at Lambda Literary, we reflect on our achievements of 2012 all of which have been made possible because of you, our dedicated supporters.

The new work I am most proud of this year is our LGBT Writers in Schools program as it has steadily expanded thanks to the dedication of writer, Lambda Fellow and volunteer extraordinaire, Monica Carter. Placing well known LGBT authors in high school and college literature classes to discuss their books in person or via video Skype, the program reached five high schools this year: three in California, one each in San Francisco, Oakland and Los Angeles, as well as a high school in Wilmington, DE, and another in Brownsburg, IN. The program was also implemented in six universities: Sonoma State University, Wichita State University, University of Memphis, Western Washington University, Drake University, and two campuses of the University of Wisconsin: Rock County and River Falls. The feedback from our participating authors, teachers and students has been outstanding. In 2013, we look forward to building upon our work with young people by helping reduce stigma, fight bullying and bridge understanding through the literary arts.

LLF accomplished an array of other successes as well:

  • In February, LLF participated in the Annenberg Foundation’s “Alchemy” program for high achieving nonprofits.
  • In March we proudly organized our first LGBT writers of color reading held during the Association of Writers and Writing Programs conference in Chicago.
  • Also in March, we launched an LLF book club co-sponsored with the West Hollywood Public Library.
  • In New York in June we sold out the Lambda Literary Awards gala for the first time in recent memory. The ceremony featured Armistead Maupin and Kate Millett along with an extraordinary group of Lammy finalistsrepresenting the best writing of the year.
  • This summer’s Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices once again hosted a stellar group of up-and-coming writers as students, and leading authors as faculty, including Dorothy Allison, Jewelle Gomez, Cris Beam and Alex Sanchez.
  • We were also thrilled that veteran activist, Kathleen DeBold, joined LLF’s staff as the Lambda Literary Awards Administrator. She’s already overseen a record year in Lammy submissions with over 660!
  • Throughout 2012 our web magazine, Lambda Literary Review, edited by William Johnson, published over 200 reviews and dozens of high profile interviews making us the world leader in LGBT book reviews. Read it regularly at

2013, as you may already know, will mark LLF’s 25th anniversary as the nation’s leading nonprofit organization that promotes and supports LGBT literature. A great deal of work still remains to advance and defend LGBT writers, readers, publishers and our entire literary community.
