Lambda Literary Foundation 25th Anniversary Highlights

  • On April 27th, we celebrated “OutWrite!” and honored five of our west coast literary pioneers: Malcolm BoydLillian FadermanKatherine V. ForrestJohn Rechy and Patricia Nell Warren. Since 1995, Lambda Literary Foundation has recognized 26 outstanding individuals with its Pioneer Award.
  • The 25th Annual Lambda Literary Awards were held on June 2nd in New York City at the historic Great Hall at Cooper Union. Over 500 attended to celebrate the year’s best books in addition to our special honorees Augusten BurroughsJohn Irving and Cherrie Moraga. Since 1989, LLF has shortlisted nearly 2,500 LGBT books in two dozen categories and awarded over 550 Lammys.
  • LLF published its first-ever e-book: 25 for 25: An Anthology of Works by 25 Outstanding Contemporary LGBT Authors and Those They Inspired. Edited by Ames Hawkins and Judith Markowitz, the anthology includes works by some of our community’s leading authors like Dorothy AllisonRigoberto GonzalezIvan E. Coyote and Edmund White, with original introductions by emerging writers they’ve influenced.
  • Last summer’s Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices hosted 48 students and 4 leading authors as faculty including Samuel DelanyMalinda LoDavid Groff and Sarah Schulman. Since its inception in 2007, the Retreat has graduated over 240 Lambda Fellows in Fiction, Genre Fiction, Nonfiction and Poetry.
  • LLF participated in the Annenberg Foundation’s “Alchemy Plus” program, a continuation of their capacity building trainings for high achieving nonprofits.
  • Kathleen DeBold, Lambda Literary Awards Administrator, presided over another record-breaking year of Lammy submissions with over 730! That number has nearly quadrupled since our first Lambda Literary Awards 25 years ago.
  • Throughout 2013, our web magazineLambda Literary Review, edited by William Johnson, published 208 book reviews and 48 high profile interviews including conversations with David SedarisHilton AlsNicola Griffith, Martin Duberman, Erin BelieuTC TolbertTim Trace Peterson, Allan Gurganus and D.A.
