After three years as Managing Editor of LambdaLiterary.org, William Johnson has been named Lambda Literary’s Program Director. Johnson will continue to oversee the web magazine’s reviews, interviews and features while assuming a leading role in the administration of Lambda Literary’s Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices and its growing community outreach efforts including conferences, organizational partnerships and literary events.
Before joining Lambda Literary, Johnson worked as a Brooklyn-based essayist, cultural critic, and the editor and publisher of Mary Literary, a literary journal dedicated to showcasing queer/gay writings of artistic merit. Previously, Johnson also served as the Coordinator of HIV and Wellness Services at William F. Ryan Community Health Center–Chelsea/Clinton, Education Director at Men of Color Against AIDS (MOCA), and Youth Education Coordinator at ROCA/Youthstar.
“William’s broad range of experience has given him a deep understanding of our literary and publishing communities as well as important skills honed while working within community-based organizations,” said Tony Valenzuela, Executive Director. “We’re thrilled to have him with Lambda full-time.”
Lambda Literary has grown steadily in recent years requiring an increase in staff capacity to continue to develop its renowned programs. Working out of his Brooklyn office, Johnson will become Lambda’s third full-time employee and will report to Valenzuela at Lambda Literary’s Los Angeles headquarters.
“For a hopeless bibliophile like me, working at Lambda Literary has been a tremendously affirming professional experience,” said Johnson. “I am delighted to take on an expanded role within the organization and proud to be a part of an institution that is recognized as one of the leading champions of LGBTQ literature. I look forward to actively engaging with our stalwart community of LGBTQ editors, poets, authors, and scholars and working to ensure that our vital collective of readers and writers thrives.”
Johnson’s writing has appeared in The Tenth Magazine, CrushFanzine, and Spunk [Arts] Magazine.
