Twice in a decade? Highly unlikely. The Booker Prize is carefully weighted, with literary merit on the one hand (which ALL of Hollinghurst’s books have in spades) and the author’s social role on the other: The Line of Beauty was universally described as ‘the gay Booker’, and there will then be a Booker from a non-English writer, Irish or Indian, then a woman, then a punky one like ‘Vernon God Little’, followed by another magisterial tome by a great white man. Variety seems to be the order of the day.
