Some bad news for anti-gay groups: California schools are already including the accomplishments of prominent LGBT people to their curriculum, even in traditionally conservative suburban areas like Sacramento.

The Sacramento City Unified School District has been encouraging educators to teach kids about the contributions of Harvey Milk. One of the books schools have purchased to aid in the effort is In Celebration of Harvey Milk, a workbook written by Angela F. Luna, a lesbian fourth grade teacher in Sacramento. Luna said:

I think that he definitely made long-lasting contributions to their state, and in the fourth grade we learn about California history. He is part of California history so it ties into the curriculum. If we are teaching about the whole community to the child, as we should be, we are teaching them about everybody, not just groups that are sanctioned by the powers that be. Everyone needs to be validated.
