Lesléa Newman will read from October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepard on Friday, June 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the New York Public Library, 455 Fifth Avenue, New York NY.

October Mourning is a novel-in-verse that explores the impact of Matthew Shepard’s murder in a cycle of 68 poems that consist of fictitious monologues in the voices of the silent witnesses of the crime: the truck Matthew was kidnapped in, the fence to which he was tied, the moon that watched over him, and the deer that kept him company all through the night. Lesléa Newman was the keynote speaker for Gay Awareness week at the University of Wyoming the year Matthew Shepard was killed and arrived on campus the day he died. October Mourning  is her personal response to this hate crime and is told with sorrow, anger, regret, and love.
